A man has been arrested for his alleged role in a hit-and-run incident that left a girl dead, authorities said.
Barrington Hewitt, 52, of Paterson, has been charged with second-degree death by auto, third-degree aggravated assault by auto, second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, third-degree leaving the scene of an accident, and two counts of third-degree endangering an injured victim.
Hewitt was charged on October 12. Authorities said on September 13 at around 3 a.m., police were called to a hit-and-run on 17th Avenue and East 33rd Street. They were told it involved three young people.
Police found a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were hurt. The girl later died and the boy sustained a broken foot, police said. The third person, a 16-year-old boy, did not report any injuries.
Hewitt is being held at the Bergen County Jail. He could face decades in prison if convicted on the charges.
