A body was discovered early Thursday morning in an abandoned building in Paterson after a fire was extinguished, according to officials.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Investigations Unit was notified of a possible fatality at around 3:30 a.m., in an abandoned structure located at the intersection of Franklin Street and Mercer Street. The Paterson Fire Department, after putting out the flames at 69 Mercer Street, found the deceased individual on the building’s second floor.

The identity of the deceased is currently unknown and will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office as their investigation continues.

Authorities have stated that the investigation into the incident is active and ongoing.
