Paterson man arrested in Broadway murder

A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on May 5, 2024, at the intersection of Broadway and East 24th Street. The incident led to the death of a 62-year-old man.

Jimmy Mercedes, 39, of Paterson, faces multiple charges including first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and second-degree certain person not to possess a weapon.

The event unfolded when police were called to the scene at about 10:22 a.m. on May 5, following reports of a shooting. They found Daryle Robinson, also from Paterson, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Robinson was promptly taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment, where he later died.

Authorities have stated that the investigation pointed to Mercedes as the individual responsible for the shooting. He turned himself into the police on May 10, around 8 a.m.

The murder charge could result in a sentence of 30 years to life imprisonment. The state intends to seek pretrial detention for Mercedes, and a hearing is set before a superior court judge.
