Paterson man charged in Auburn Street murder

Daquann-Barnes

A man has been charged in connection with the August 31 homicide near Ellison and Auburn streets.

Daquann Barnes, 37, of Paterson, is charged with murder, first degree; unlawful possession of a weapon, second degree; possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second degree; and certain persons not to possess weapons, second degree.

On August 31, at approximately 2:47 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Auburn and Ellison streets in response to a ShotSpotter activation. Upon arrival, police found Raheem Porter, 41, of Paterson, lying face down with gunshot wounds. Porter was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation led to the identification of Barnes as the shooter. He was arrested on September 2 without incident. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office plans to file a motion for pre-trial detention, which will be scheduled by the Superior Court.

Murder carries a sentencing range of 30 years to life imprisonment. The second-degree charges each carry potential sentences of 5 to 10 years in prison.
