The High School Proficiency Assessment or HSPA is a proficiency test adminstered through out the state of NJ and a mandatory requirement if students want to graduate. In Paterson only 44 percent of high school graduates passed the test while more than half of them were below proficient in other words failing. Other students are opted into Alternative High School Assessment (AHSA) as a last effort in graduating. This was reported by a lesser known newspaper.
