Appellate court rules against Sayegh-linked challenge to remove Mendez from Paterson mayoral ballot

Incumbent mayor Andre Sayegh suffered a defeat on Friday when an appellate court ruled in favor of the City Clerk, allowing councilman Alex Mendez to remain on the mayoral ballot.

Sayegh supporter Vincent Iannaccone objected to Mendez’s petitions. His objections were rejected by city clerk Sonia Gordon. He later took his case to the court and lost. And then filed an appeal which he lost on Friday.

At the core of the case was whether the City Clerk can count the petitions of voters who signed for multiple candidates. The court found her process of counting the petition first turned into her office as proper exercise of her discretion.

Gordon is following a practice that has existed in Paterson for decades.
