Nine running for school board seats; Wendy Guzman calls it quits

Almost a dozen city residents are running for three — three-year term — up for grabs school board seats.

Incumbents Jonathan Hodges and Chrystal Cleaves are seeking re-election to hold on to their board seats, while newly appointed school board member Flavio Rivera is running unopposed to continue to serve the remaining two years of former school board member Alex Mendez’s term.

Mendez jumped ship to the city council leaving a vacant seat at the board which was filled by Rivera following a vote in June.

Among the incumbents one name was conspicuously missing from the candidates list: Wendy Guzman. Guzman, who has been serving on the board since 2007, will not seek a new term. Guzman presently works in the city as a senior clerical typist, according to city payroll.

Six others have put forth their names for a board seat: Koyes Ahmed, Lilisa Mimms, Emanuel Capers, Taj Uddin, Khader “Ken” Abuassab, and Nelly Celi.

Mimms, Celi, Uddin, and Abuassab — whose name is listed by the county clerk’s office as: Khadar “Ken” Abuassar – were among those who submitted resumes in June to takeover Mendez’s vacant seat, but were overlooked by the board.

Each candidate is seeking a three-year term of office during the general election to be held in November 4th, 2014.
