After widespread condemnation from the city’s African-American community and her fellow candidates for using the n-word at a community forum, 1st Ward candidate Alveria Spencer announced Saturday afternoon she is pulling out of the November special election.
Four of the five individuals seeking to represent the city’s 1st Ward gathered inside the School 28 auditorium on Monday evening in a forum that has been described as “disorganized” and devoid of substance.
Three out of the five 1st Ward city council candidates said they oppose mayor Jose “Joey” Torres’ recreation tax which – if approved by voters on November 3rd, 2015 – will raise $3 million from property owners in order to acquire and maintain recreational facilities.
More than a year after 1st Ward council candidate Alveria Spencer was found to have allegedly underreported her household income to qualify for public housing assistance she has yet to repay the Paterson Housing Authority the reduced $4,000 penalty.
The former Paterson Housing Authority employee, who was involved in a Section 8 underreported income scandal with one-time school board candidate Alveria Spencer said he did nothing wrong.
